Many moons ago, some of our mutual friends invited us to brewery trivia on the same day. Surprisingly, the goal was not to make the Guy Fieri Fan Club the greatest trivia team of all time, but to set Leigh up with someone who wasn't Colton... Neither goal was accomplished, but some time later, an alumni tailgate at a rain-delayed SMU football game brought us together for an unofficial first date.
A month of consistent hangouts but no official “dates” later, we went on our first "real" date, which inclcuded an actual ask, a pick-up at the door, etc. We also way overdressed because we already felt we had something special (and also because Colton said the dress code was "business casual").
Time for “hometowns.” Colton took Leigh to Crandall for some Friday night lights and began introducing her to his fam. Contrary to best-man-Austin's tall tales, there is NOT a statue of Colton on campus.
Then Leigh took Colton to Thomasville via NYE in Charleston and a beach stop in St. George.
Colton met the Avera's with a bottle of Malbec in-hand, and the ensuing conversation was mostly about Argentinian history, led by the one and only resident historian, Mr. Steve Avera.
We talked about our younger selves during visits to each of our university towns. Would we have hung out with each other in college...? Idk.
We decided to move in together at our favorite little apartment with a view (also with friends just a few doors away). Long live the Amelia Dormitory. And the Amelia Street Racers.
We bonded over our love for live music at a number of concerts (including a Charley Crockett one in Austin where we both decided in our heads we would get married but didn't tell each other)...
And we bonded over our love for traveling and camping (sometimes) and seeing the world...
And we bonded over our love for the Polish mountains at Christmas...
And we bonded over our love for the beach...
And we bonded over our love for Joe the cat. Aka Turbocat. Aka Stonks. Aka Mao. Aka Lil' Josef Exotic, COVID Kitty from the Petco Streets...
And we bonded over our love for each other.
Can't wait to celebrate that love with y'all in Apalachicola!
GETTING TO APALACHICOLA
ON THE "FORGOTTEN COAST"
They don't call it the Forgotten Coast for nothing! Apalachicola & St. George Island are not the easiest destinations to reach, mainly becuase of the beautiful but large state and national forests to the north. So we have orgainzed a map that includes our most recommended travel routes, lodging options, and plenty of other things-to-do that we hope make for easy planning, smooth travel, and a good ol' time once you're here. See you in Apalach!
FLY TO ECP OR TLH + 2 HOUR DRIVE
Apalachicola is ~2 hours driving from the two nearest major airports. Rental cars are available at both, but we will be running shuttles to/from them as well. Once in town, all wedding weekend locations are within walking distance of The Gibson Inn. Shuttle schedules TBC based on flight info we receive from RSVPs.
DRIVE THE COAST OR THE FOREST
Your best routes to Apalachicola are along the coasts, through Port St. Joe from the west or Carrabelle from the East. Driving south through the Apalachicola National Forest is beautiful and mostly a straight shot, but cell service will be spotty. Choose your own adventure!
PICK YOUR HOTEL OR RENTAL
We have a block of rooms at The Gibson Inn and there is a great selection of Airbnb & VRBO rental properties available. If you'd prefer more beach-y digs and don't mind driving your party 15-20 minutes each way to/from the wedding sites (no Ubers, sry), check the options on St. George Island.
WEDDING (AND PARTY) TIME!
Here are all of the stops for wedding weekend, all of which are 5-10 minutes walking from The Gibson Inn.
VISIT OUR FAVORITE LOCAL SPOTS
While you're in town, check out some of these other local haunts where you'd likely find us on any other weekend.
